Some people seem to have trouble with this product. Ignore their issues and order with confidence. There are over 3200 products in the Pet Supplies category at Amazon. This product is #38, placing in nearly the top 1% of all pet supplies ordered on Amazon. That ought to tell you everything you need to know about the utility of Flush Puppies. They are an outstanding product. Additionally, flushing dog waste is the EPA's recommendation and preference for disposing of pet waste. Placing solid waste in your garbage pollutes our landfills.

A few tips to address some of the issues found in the 1 and 2 star ratings. You cannot knot these bags or any other bag and expect them to flush. You've trapped air inside the bag and created a ballon. It wants to float, not sink. It's not surprising a problem is created. It doesn't matter if you think you've gotten all the air out; some will be trapped and the bag will float. What you want to do is flush the bag in such a way that the flushing action drives the air out of the bag, making it sink and easy to flush. To do this, simply make sure the bag is open at the top, at least a little. Flush the toilet FIRST to get the flush action moving. Then just drop the bag into the swirl and physics takes care of the rest. As you drop the bag into the whirlpool, the air is driven out and away it goes.

On the issue of clogged pipes, let's just say the mass and consistency of these bags is far less than the typical solids flushed away (dogs OR humans). If typical solids aren't clogging your pipes, neither will these bags. This product wouldn't be anywhere near the top of best sellers in Pet Supplies at Amazon if clogged pipes was a widespread issue. Could the bags have contributed to a clog? Absolutely. And so would anything else flushed down the toilet at that residence.

As far as septic systems are concerned, I hope the person describing a problem is having their septic system inspected every 2-3 years and pumped every 4-5 years depending on the household. Otherwise, its just a matter of time before a problem occurs, flush bags aside. Septic systems have two main components, the tank and the field (actually three including the distribution box. It is not material to this discussion). The tank holds everything flushed. In the tank, solids sink and bacteria break down most of what is flushed. Not all the solids are dissolved and what the bacteria can't handle stays at the bottom of the tank and accumulates there. Liquid effluent in the tank rises until it reaches a pipe leading to the field. The effluent flows into the field where bacteria and mother nature take over, completing the break down and purification of the effluent.

Septic fields are ruined when the tank is not pumped and accumulated solids rise to the level of the field pipe. At that point, solids are carried into the field, requiring a very expensive solution (replacing the field). Septic systems work extremely well - as long as they are maintained. If you have a septic system, The Septic System Owner's Manual is an invaluable guide to maintaining the health of your septic system. Of note, damage to septic fields is completely preventable with the use of a filter on the tank's effluent pipe. If the septic tank has not been pumped the filter will [eventually] clog up and protect the field. You won't be able to flush your toilet; that's your signal to call the pumping company. Cleaning up a bathroom is far cheaper than replacing a septic field.

we've been using flush puppies for almost 4.5 years for our 90 pound lab. the bags are big enough to hold all his "stuff", though there are times when we've had to use two bags after a particularly large situation. despite having a crappy toilet with a weak flush, we've had no big issues with using the bags. just make sure to not tie the bag closed, and to drop it down opening last so no air pockets get trapped in the bag when flushing.

the only challenge is when it's wet outside. once the bag gets wet (whether from rain or an upset stomach from eating goose poop), it starts breaking down. luckily our dog does his business right near our house, so the trip to the bathroom is pretty quick. there have been a few times that the bag has broken before we make it inside, but it's only been a few times in 4.5 years.

overall, it's a great product that works and helps keep the landfills clear of dog poop.

I find the flush puppies convenient, giving me the ability to dispose of the poop in a toilet after walking the dogs. The bags are sturdy, have no appreciable odor, and flush instantly every time for me. I love not having to have stinky bags stored in a container for a week at a time. Well worth the small premium in cost.
(added by edit:) My dogs are small (i.e. small poops) and my toilets are new. I could foresee that occasionally a full bag could clog an older toilet. Be cautious under the latter circumstances. YMMV.
Update June 29, 2016: Three of my past four orders of flush puppies have been defective, in that each bag is difficult to unfold. I can spend a couple minutes just trying to open a bag. I sent an email to the makers and then called their phone number, both of which contacts are encouraged on their website. The phone was not answered and I left a message. I received no reply to either contact attempt.
I can no longer recommend this product, reduced my rating from 5 to 2 stars, and will be looking for an alternative brand.
Update July 21, 2017: Full disclosure - I found no satisfactory alternative brand, was enamored of the concept of flushable poop bags, and continued to order Flush Puppies and deal with the hassle of opening the bags. Around the start of 2017, the bags became simple to unfold. Apparently the producer figured out how to keep it from sticking to itself. I have now used several successive orders that open easily, and am now upgrading my rating to five stars. I wish they had been more responsive, but won't let that detract from this valuable product.

I was excited to try these bags. But, because of two major issues, we won't be buying them again.
First they are very short. Plenty wide enough but the bag is simply not long enough. It barely covered my hand and was not long enough to knot, which led to poop on my hand.
Second I do not feel comfortable flushing them. I put one in the bowl and let it sit to make sure it would dissolve. After about 4 hours it appeared just as solid as ever. Maybe it will dissolve later but the risk of a toilet clogged with a dog poop bag is not a fun thought to entertain.
I'm glad these bags worked for some people but they were just not for me.

PROS: You can flush them--that's huge right there. And they come in a handy tissue-like pouch which is easier on the pocket than a roll of plastic bags and easier to pull out too, versus trying to rip a bag off a roll.

CONS: They don't do much to mask the odor. If your dog poops near your house and you can scoop and flush immediately, they're great. But if you're out and you need to walk a few blocks home, they don't do a very good job of containing the odor, especially versus plastic bags
