I like the fact that this food seems to have all the best products, although our Muti-Poo tolerated the food, then we decided to change to "Blue" puppy blend. Our Puppy eats the "Blue" much more. I'm not knocking the Merrick but our puppy didn't love it. I just want the best food for our dog. Please give feed back on dog food facts if pertinent.

After lots of research, we chose to transition our 10-week old berger picard puppy from the breeder's Purina ProPlan to Merrick Classic Puppy food. Our puppy has thrived on this food! He is now 7 months old, weighs 54 pounds, with a beautiful coat and in perfect health. This breed is notorious for being finicky eaters, with very sensitive stomachs. Our puppy always eats his food right up and he always has very regular "normal" stools. Merrick dog food is Made in the USA - that is comforting in today's day and age. Top Quality Puppy Food from a Top Quality Company, Merrick's Classic.

This product was highly recommended and clearly of high quality, but it caused loose-ish poops for our Westie puppy. FWIW, we transitioned to Wellness Core Puppy and, so far (after a couple weeks), his poops are more solid, darker, and stink less.

Trial and error -- that's our experience. My wife and I got a female soft coated wheaten terrier puppy from a breeder. The breeder had been using grain free Precise Naturals. Our puppy doesn't eat more than necessary, but, even so, it seemed to us that she did't care for her food. Using the internet, I researched alternative food as best as I could. My focus was on food that was made in America and contained no ingredients from China. I even sent emails to manufacturers to ask about those two issues. Blue Buffalo seemed to be a top quality food -- it was prevalent in stores, on the internet, and more expensive than other foods. However, the email reply I received turned me off -- instead of replying "yes" or "no", it sent me a lengthy "lawyer's letter" containing a lot of ifs, ands, and buts. My internet search also revealed that, in lawsuits against it, its defense is that it didn't make the food (a manufacturer it hired made the food). So, I decided against Blue Buffalo. Then I found Merrick, and liked that it is clear about being made in America and having no ingredients from China (not even additives).

We began with Merrick Classic. Our puppy liked it. However, we noticed that she developed an itchy butt and erratic bowels movements (all formed, but the timing was off). Then we switched to Merrick Grain Free. Our puppy liked it. However, we noticed that she became lethargic (unusual for a soft coated wheaten terrier puppy, not yet spayed), and she became disinterested in her food. Then we decided to mix Merrick Classic with Merick Grain Free (50/50). Time will tell how this mixture works out, but for now it seems just right. Our puppy once again is playful and spirited, and her bowel movements seem appropriate.

Our thoughts are that every puppy is different, just as every baby is different. I have healthy twin grandsons, yet their food preferences and allergies vary. Our puppy's vet seems to agree, even though she's not definitive about the issue, and she probably would be happy if we bought food she sells (not Merrick).

Probably what's true is that there are a lot of fine choices on the market. Just experiment, to find out what works best for your puppy. And, if you agree with me, don't put any food from China in your puppy's mouth. I don't dislike China, but I don't think there's any dispute about the fact that its food and health regulations fall short.

    Updated 4/18/2016:
I changed my review from 5 stars to 1 star for the following reason. My 2nd order from Amazon came from a 3rd party. Nothing but lies, delays, and likely contaminated or stale puppy food. Amazon stepped in and got me my refund, but apparently ignored the other more important issues. Puppy food, human food, medicine, cosmetics -- barring unlikely events, from now on I'll buy them at the store instead of on Amazon. Health and safety matter.

Pup was happy with it. It went pretty fast, although I think I'm going to be switching to Orijen or Earthbound. There's a little boutique store that sells dog food and I asked the guy what his thoughts were. No joke, this guy was like a compendium of all things dog food. I asked him to rate the food he had in stock. Out of 6 brands, Merrick rated 4th place, behind the two above and some other one. He seemed very well informed and told me of certain events that have happened to Merrick, specifically relating to their recall. After doing some more research, there's actually a website dedicated to all of the issues that they're having.

While my pup was very happy with this and the canned food, I ultimately decided to switch. It made me nervous to be giving my little boy food from a company that doesn't implement proper quality assurance procedures in their product.

I am so mad the shelter where we got our dog gave us a bag of this dog food because it is so awesome that now we can't imagine feeding him anything else. We have had other dogs and didn't buy them the "fancy dog food", but honestly it seems like this product really makes a positive difference in so many ways that we are committing to continuing to use Merrick. Our dog's coat is so soft and lovely and his teeth are really clean and white and he doesn't have those horrible typical stinky dog farts. He eats sticks, leave and twigs all the time and still his poops are solid and easy to pick up. I think the Merrick food is really good for him.

Seriously try this. It's worth it for the elimination of stinky dog farts and runny poops alone.

The shelter gave us a bag of Merrick cat food also for our 4 yr. old feral cat that lives in the backyard and she has never looked better. Her coat is especially thick and shiny this year since we started feeding her it.

I recently rescued a 7 week old off the side of the road, and I immediately bought a bag of Purina Puppy Chow. This pup pooped about 8 times a day! Then I did my research and discovered that the cheap, corn-based foods just ran right out of them (they also eat 3 times more). I chose this food based on the ingredients listed and other customer opinions. After using it for 2 weeks, her poop decreased greatly and she is satisfied with less food. Great food for my new baby!
